The Wairoa Gorge
How to book a day of shuttling at the Wairoa Gorge Bike Park:
1. Join the club for 2017 - do that here
2. Once your club membership payment has cleared (instant with credit card/PayPal or 48hrs with bank transfer) log into this website by clicking here
4. Buy a Wairoa membership add-on ($45) and book your shuttle days ($95 per day per person). Shuttles run on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. You must book at least one day when you buy the add-on. You can come back at any time and book more shuttle days where there is availability. You can book as many days as you want.
5. If you pay by credit card/PayPal then that's it. If you pay by bank transfer you have up-to 5 days to pay.
Note: You can change the date of your shuttle days at the Gorge up-to 7 days before you are due to ride, space allowing. Go to "Manage Bookings". We can't do refunds on days booked (the admin around it is just too much, so please be sure you want to come and ride the Gorge before you book a day).
Here is a link to some videos of the various tracks in the WGBP (this will be populated with more videos over the coming weeks)
If you are a visitor to the region and want to ride at WGBP on a scheduled shuttle day, you can buy a single day shuttle pass which includes a temporary one day only club membership for an all-inclusive price of $150. This does not entitle you to any of the many benefits that NTMBC members enjoy, and does not include a temporary forestry permit for riding the trails around Nelson (which is an additional $15 - available from all good bike shops in town). Contact firstname.lastname@example.org for more details. Please note that you will need to arrange this during working hours (9am - 5pm, Monday-Friday).
Private shuttle days:
If you would like to ride the WGBP on a day when regular shuttles are not scheduled and you'd like to book your own shuttle vehicle so you can explore the park exclusively with your own crew, then we can sort that out for you. Please contact: email@example.com and let us know the day you want to book, numbers and your contact information.
Groups up to 10 = $1200 per day, Groups 10 - 22 = $2100 per day
All payments must be made in advance. Bookings may be re-scheduled provided request is received no less than 7 days prior to booked day. There are no refunds.
How to book a stay at the Wairoa Gorge Lodge:
There is a very comfortable gas heated lodge that can be booked for overnight stays at the Wairoa Gorge Bike Park. It sleeps up-to 14. It has BBQ's, toilets, hot showers, kitchen and lounge facilities - but you will need to bring your own food and linen/sleeping bag. The kitchen is fully equipped with cooking and serving utensils as well as all the mod-cons including fridges, dishwasher, microwave and even an espresso machine! There is no guarantees on salt, tea, cooking oil etc, so you will need to be prepared to fully self-cater. Perfect for relaxing after a big day riding or having a weekend away. The river is close if you want to have a swim after a days riding.
There is one room with a double bed and ensuite and the other four rooms each sleep three people in a bunk bed and one single bed. There is no phone or cellphone reception. The lodge must be left clean and tidy on departure or else your group will forfeit their bond.
The cost of the lodge per night is $450 for up to 8 people ($56 per person), and $50 per additional person up-to the maximum of 14. The bond is $300.
Please note that as the lodge is on site it is within the property gates, which are locked between 5pm and 7am. After hours access is only possible in case of emergency. Check-in is strictly 4pm or earlier by arrangement. If you arrive after this time, the cost is $150 to have a staff member meet you at your designated arrival time.
On the day of departure, the Lodge must be cleaned and vacated by 8.30am, unless there are no bookings the following night, then riders may use the Lodge during the day and vacate by 4pm.
It should be noted that the main gate will be locked between 5pm and 7am and groups staying in the Lodge cannot leave the site, nor can anyone come late.
To book the lodge please send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org with your preferred date, number of people staying and contact information. All bookings must be paid for in advance and some members of the group must be booked onto an adjacent shuttle day (although it is ok for riders to have non-riding friends/family with them in the Lodge for the night._ Bookings may be rescheduled provided the request is received no less than 7 days prior to the booked day. No refunds.

Agreement opens access to Wairoa Gorge mountain bike trails
Nelson Mountain Bike Club (NMTBC) has entered into a rent free lease agreement with RHL NZ Limited (RHL) that sees the club gain access to RHL’s 841-hectare property just outside Nelson, and the 70km of hand built mountain bike trails that have been created there.
The lease agreement is for 12 months and gives the club’s 1500 members the opportunity to ride what have been described as some of the world’s best mountain bike trails. This increases the total amount of mountain bike trails managed by the Nelson Mountain Bike Club to well over 100km.
Situated deep in the Wairoa Valley, ‘The Gorge’ is home to an amazing variety of hand-built mountain bike trails that run through a lush native and beech forest environment from a maximum elevation of 1200m. For the past four years, the facility has hosted the annual Dodzy Memorial Enduro event, which is open to the public and has typically sold out in under two minutes.
This agreement between the owners and NMTBC will see year-round access for NMTBC members that wish to take part in vehicle assisted shuttle days at The Gorge. Access will be strictly controlled by NMTBC to ensure the quality of the rider experience and that all H&S and access requirements are adhered to.
“This is quite simply the biggest thing to ever happen to mountain biking in the Nelson region, if not New Zealand, and if we weren’t on the global mountain biking map before we certainly are now. The trails in The Gorge are sublime, and have to be experienced to be fully appreciated. One of the key features of the facility is the pristine native forest that the trails run through, which is a magical place to be. The trails themselves have been painstakingly created over several years by the best trail builders in New Zealand. NMTBC is delighted that RHL has chosen NMTBC to be the lease holder for this facility and we can’t wait to introduce our members to a whole new level of mountain biking enjoyment”, said NMTBC spokesperson Paul Jennings.
“RHL was looking for a way to make the park available to the mountain biking community at virtually no cost to the community, and enhance the conservation of the land, the native bush and habitat. After consideration we approached NMTBC who have the experience and membership base to safely manage the park, and we are very pleased that those discussions have led to a positive outcome for the club’s members and the wider mountain biking community in NZ. This will help RHL to realise its plans to develop the land into a worldclass mountain bike park and to open it up to local passionate mountain bikers to benefit New Zealand. RHL NZ Limited is known and applauded for its environmental efforts in regenerating native bush and species, wilding conifer control, protecting waterways and the natural environment. It values its close working relationship with local and central Government which govern New Zealand’s precious back country spaces,” said Paul Dorrance Director of RHL.
To be eligible to ride at The Gorge NMTBC club members will purchase a Gorge Top-Up, which will allow purchase of a minimum of two shuttle days per year. Additional days can be purchased as and when availability allows. NMTBC will also run a limited number of events at the facility each year that the general public can enter.
The lease agreement commences on 1 November 2016.
