Wairoa Gorge Mountain Bike Park lease extension
Nelson Mountain Bike Club (NMTBC) is delighted to announce that it has been granted an extension on its lease of Wairoa Gorge Mountain Bike Park by owners RHL NZ Limited (RHL). The new lease extends access to the 841-hectare property, and the 70km of hand built mountain bike trails that have been created there, until 31 October 2019.
The lease agreement gives the club’s 2600 members the opportunity to ride what have been described as some of the world’s best mountain bike trails. NMTBC has been operating WGBP since 1 November 2016.
“NMTBC has worked hard to get the WGBP operation up and running, and we’ve been really pleased to see so many people from around the world come to the property and enjoy the stunning trail network and environment that RHL has created here. We have a great working relationship with RHL, which has been very supportive since day one, and the extension of our lease through to the end of 2019 is a real bonus for the club and all our members. We are now able to project ahead and look to increase the efficiency of our operation, and explore ways to enable even more people to visit and experience what makes WGBP so special”, said NMTBC committee member Paul Jennings.
Situated deep in the Wairoa Valley, 45 minutes from Nelson, WGBP is home to an amazing variety of hand-built mountain bike trails that run through a lush native and beech forest environment from a maximum elevation of 1200m. The agreement between the owners and NMTBC enables year-round access for NMTBC members that wish to take part in vehicle assisted shuttle days at WGBP. Access is strictly controlled by NMTBC to ensure the quality of the rider experience and that all H&S and access requirements are adhered to.
“RHL’s goals of having WGBP safely managed, and the conservation of the land, native bush and habitat, have been well met by NMTBC during the first six months of operation, and we are very happy to be able to extend its lease to enable it to plan for the future with more certainty. It’s always been our plan to develop the land into a world-class mountain bike park and to open it up to New Zealand’s passionate mountain bikers; it’s very pleasing to see this come to fruition”, said Paul Dorrance, Director of RHL.
To be eligible to ride at WGBP NMTBC members purchase a Gorge Top-Up with their annual membership, which entitles them to book visits to WGBP when availability allows. NMTBC also runs a limited number of events at the facility each year that the public can enter. More information, and membership information, can be found at www.nelsonmtb.club/ride/wairoa.
