20 May 2022
This closure – in the first instance- is FULL closure ALL TIMES . That is, all areas of the Hira Forest (including Sharlands MTB trails) will be closed to the public 24hrs a day, 7 days a week from 25 May to 12 August 2022.
Hira Forest is an active production forest. Health and Safety of all forest users is the primary concern of Tasman Pine Forests Ltd (“TPFL”), its contractors and Koata Limited.
TPFL and Koata Limited apologise for the short notice which has come about due to harvest planning reviews and COVID related market conditions. Their decision was based on consideration of the safety of the public.
NMTBC advises our members to remain clear of Hira Forest until notified otherwise. In the meantime, NMTBC is meeting with stakeholders to work through possible plans that may allow access to limited areas of the forest when those areas are safe to use. These plans are in their infancy and we hope to resolve them asap.
As negotiations are being held, NMTBC and recreational users cannot afford any breach of access to the closed areas. We must demonstrate our abilities to operate safely, to not jeopardise any possible access agreements being sought.
A further forest closure will likely be required from October 1 through to mid December 2022.
We thank you for your patience and understanding at this time.
