ABOUT
Situated 1 hour away from central Nelson, deep in the Wairoa Valley, ‘The Gorge’ is home to over 70km of world class hand-built single track. Trails start at grade 3 and go all the way to grade 6. You will get almost 1000m descending on every top to bottom run!
The Gorge is operated by the Nelson Mountain Bike Club (NMTBC) for the benefit of our members and guests. NMTBC manage and maintain the trails and accommodation with a small crew and a large number of club volunteers. Regular shuttles run Friday – Sunday but is open for private bookings 7 days a week.
DIG DAY INFORMATION
The Wairoa Gorge was built as a billionaires dream MTB park. As leaseholders the club has inherited over 70km of single track, roads and lodges that all need to be maintained in order to deliver an excellent product for our local NMTBC members and the wider MTB community. The Volunteer Experience is a great way to get involved in the amazing place that is The Gorge. You don’t have to be a highly skilled Mountain Biker or an outdoor warrior, we have jobs to suit all skill levels and physical abilities.
Dig Days at the Gorge are scheduled throughout the year. You can view, and register for, the upcoming dig days on The Gorge website
Tasks vary from fixing trails, to checking for storm damage, to road and building maintenance to general trail grooming. The Gorge welcomes new volunteers and the team will show you what needs to be done.
You’ll need to bring suitable footwear for working on steep terrain, a packed lunch and water, a backpack and suitable clothing for being in the hills. All tools provided.
